Budget Baron: How I Finally Got the Achievement (After 5 Embarrassing Attempts)
The achievement that taught me cheap fabrics can win. The exact $470 combo, the best commissions to target, and why you should stop trying to 5-star everything.
๐ In this guide
What is the Budget Baron achievement?
Budget Baron is one of those achievements that sounds simple until you actually try it: complete any commission while spending less than $500 total on fabrics. I saw this in my achievement list at around hour 10 and thought "oh, easy, I'll just use cheap fabrics." Famous last words. ๐ฐ
Here's the catch: most commissions have quality minimums that are hard to hit with bottom-tier fabrics. And some commissions have color requirements that force you into specific (expensive) fabrics. You need to find the sweet spot: a commission with a low quality floor, flexible color requirements, and tags that cheap fabrics can cover.
The achievement details:
- Achievement: Budget Baron
- Requirement: Complete any commission with total fabric cost under $500
- Difficulty: Tricky (depends on commission choice)
- Reward: Achievement unlocked + bragging rights
I attempted this five times before I finally got it. Five times. Each failure taught me something new about the game's economy and which commissions are actually budget-friendly. Let me save you the pain.
Best commissions to attempt it
After testing every early-game commission, here are the only two I'd recommend for Budget Baron:
- First Fitting โ Quality minimum ~65, tags are forgiving, colors are basic. This is the easiest target by far.
- Summer Breeze โ Quality minimum 72, Cute + Romantic tags, Pink + White colors. Slightly harder but very doable with the right combo.
Do NOT attempt this on anything 3-star or above. The quality floors are too high, and you'll end up spending more on retries than you save. Trust me, I tried. It hurt.
The exact budget fabric combination (save yourself the headache)
If you just want the answer, here it is โ screenshot this:
That's $470 total โ $30 under the limit. Quality lands at 74 for me, just above the 72 minimum for Summer Breeze. Emma's reaction was basically ๐ (polite, not ecstatic, but a pass is a pass).
Why this works: Cotton Pink is your Cute engine at $120. Tulle Ivory covers white and adds Romantic at $150. Linen Beige is your quality insurance at $200 โ it's not on-color, but at 25% it doesn't break the color check. Duh, in hindsight โ but it took me five failures to find this combo.
My failed attempts (in painful chronological order)
I'm sharing these because I guarantee at least one mirrors what you were about to try. Learn from my wallet's suffering. ๐ธ
What I used: Cotton Pink ($120) + Cotton Pink ($120) + Cotton Pink ($120)
Why it failed: I thought "three cheapest fabrics = guaranteed under budget." Quality came back at 68 โ four points under the 72 minimum. All-same-fabric builds have terrible quality ceilings. Also, the color check was monotone. What was I thinking.
What I used: Cotton Pink ($120) + Tulle Ivory ($150) + Lace White ($280)
Why it failed: I added Lace White for the Elegant boost, but $280 pushed me over budget to $550. And quality still only hit 70. Lace White is great but it's not worth breaking the budget for. The achievement doesn't care about your star rating โ just pass the commission.
What I used: Cotton Pink ($120) + Tulle Ivory ($150) + Linen Beige ($200)
Why it failed: SO close. Right fabrics, right price ($470), but I messed up the proportions โ too much Linen Beige dragged the color check down. Quality 71. One point. ONE. POINT. I literally stared at the results screen in silence for a full minute.
What I used: Cotton Pink ($120) + Tulle Ivory ($150) + Linen Beige ($200)
Why it worked: I fixed the proportions to 40/35/25 and hit quality 74. Three stars, not five, but the achievement doesn't care. Budget Baron unlocked! I literally fist-pumped at my desk. My cat judged me. Worth it.
Step-by-step walkthrough
Here's exactly how I run this now:
Before you accept
- Pick Summer Breeze or First Fitting. Do NOT attempt this on anything harder.
- Buy 1 unit each of Cotton Pink, Tulle Ivory, and Linen Beige. That's $470 total โ under the $500 limit with $30 to spare.
- Save your game. Save right before accepting. If you mess up, reload. No shame.
Design phase
- Start with Cotton Pink as your base at roughly 40% allocation. This is your Cute engine.
- Add Tulle Ivory at about 35%. Watch the white color check tick past 25%.
- Finish with Linen Beige at 25%. This is your quality insurance โ don't go above 30% or the color check gets thin.
- Glance at the color meter: pink should be 40%+, white should be 25%+. If white looks short, nudge 5% from linen to tulle.
Sewing phase
At 2-star difficulty the sewing mini-game is very forgiving. My successful run had around 85% stitch accuracy and landed at quality 74. You don't need perfection โ just don't zone out completely. I sew the cotton first (it's the most forgiving), then tulle, then linen. Linen is a bit tricky but at 25% allocation it's manageable. ๐ชก
Common mistakes I see people make
โ Trying to get 5 stars
The achievement doesn't care about stars. It cares about passing with under $500. A 3-star pass is still a pass. Don't overthink it.
โ Using only same-fabric stacks
Three Cotton Pinks is cheap but the quality ceiling is terrible. You need at least two different fabrics to hit the quality floor.
โ Picking the wrong commission
Don't attempt this on 3-star+ commissions. The quality floors are too high for budget fabrics. Stick to First Fitting or Summer Breeze.
โ Forgetting trim costs
The $500 limit is for FABRICS only, but some commissions have hidden trim costs. Always check the final total before confirming.
Final thoughts
Budget Baron taught me that Dressmaker's economy is deeper than I thought. You don't need expensive fabrics to pass commissions โ you need the RIGHT fabrics. Cotton Pink, Tulle Ivory, and Linen Beige are three of the cheapest fabrics in the game, and together they got me an achievement I'd been chasing for hours.
If you're still stuck, plug the requirements into our fabric calculator and test combos before spending a single in-game dollar. Would've saved me five attempts and about $2,000. Good luck, fellow tailor โ go get that achievement. ๐ฐ๐
