Masquerade Ball Guide: How I Finally Got 5 Stars for Lord Ravenwood (After 4 Embarrassing Attempts)

Everything I wish I knew before that masked weirdo walked into my shop at closing time. The exact fabric combo, the budget math, and the mistakes that cost me thousands.

Why Masquerade Ball trips everyone up

Real talk: the Masquerade Ball commission is where Dressmaker stops being a cozy little sewing game and starts demanding actual strategy. It unlocks the moment you hit Tailor Rank Journeyman, and it shows up with zero warning. One minute you're churning out cute chiffon sundresses, the next there's a tall nobleman in a raven mask standing in your shop at closing time, sliding a black envelope across your counter. ๐ŸŽญ

Here's what Lord Ravenwood is asking for:

  • Quality minimum of 88 โ€” the highest quality floor you've seen at this point in the game. Sloppy fabric picks will not survive.
  • Dramatic + Elaborate style tags โ€” and BOTH need to be covered, not just one.
  • Black AND red color requirements โ€” two mandatory colors, each needing at least 25% coverage on the finished gown.
  • 3 fabric slots โ€” so every single pick has to pull double or triple duty.
  • Budget: $3,200 โ€” sounds generous until you start pricing black and red fabrics.
  • Reward: $7,800 โ€” the biggest single payday available at Journeyman tier.

The sneaky part is that Dramatic is a rare tag at this stage of the game. Most early-game fabrics lean Cute, Romantic, or Elegant, so your muscle memory from earlier commissions actively works against you here. And Elaborate basically only shows up on brocade and lace. If you try to freestyle this one with your usual go-to fabrics, you will fail. I say this with love, because I freestyled it, and I failed. Repeatedly.

The other wall is money. Velvet Black โ€” the single best Dramatic fabric in the game โ€” costs $950 a unit, making it the most expensive fabric you can buy at this point. Brocade Red, your best true-red option, is $800. Those two "obvious" picks already eat $1,750 of your $3,200 budget before you've even thought about a third fabric.

I got this commission at midnight in real life. I'd just hit Journeyman, I was feeling invincible, and I thought "a masked ball? Sounds fun, I'll knock it out before bed." Famous last words. Four gowns later I went to bed at 2 AM, roughly $6,000 of in-game money poorer, questioning every decision that led me there.

The exact 5-star combination (save yourself the headache)

If you just want the answer so you can move on with your life, here it is โ€” screenshot this:

๐Ÿ† 5-Star Masquerade Ball Build
๐Ÿ–ค Velvet Black Primary fabric
โค๏ธ Brocade Red Secondary fabric
โœจ Silk Gold Accent fabric
๐Ÿ’ก Proportions matter! Aim for roughly 50% Velvet Black, 30% Brocade Red, 20% Silk Gold.

That's $950 + $800 + $900 = $2,650 total, leaving you $550 of breathing room under the $3,200 budget. Quality lands at 91-93 depending on how clean your sewing minigame is, comfortably above the 88 floor.

Why each fabric earns its slot:

  • Velvet Black ($950) โ€” the best Dramatic fabric in the game, full stop. It also carries Elegant as a secondary tag, and it single-handedly covers your black color requirement. This is your drama engine.
  • Brocade Red ($800) โ€” brings Elaborate AND Majestic, and it's the only true red available at this tier. Covers the red requirement by itself. The woven pattern also genuinely looks like something you'd wear to a masked ball, which honestly matters to me.
  • Silk Gold ($900) โ€” pure quality insurance. It pushes the craftsmanship score over the 88 line, adds a touch of Royal, and reads as gold embroidery on the finished gown without breaking either color requirement at a 20% proportion.

One catch: Velvet Black doesn't show up in the fabric shop until you've upgraded the shop a couple of times. If you can't see it yet, that's your sign to go grind a few smaller commissions and invest in the upgrade. It's worth it โ€” Velvet Black is basically the backbone of every dramatic commission in the back half of the game, so you'll use it constantly from here on.

I know it seems obvious in hindsight. "Black and red commission, use the black fabric and the red fabric, duh." But I promise you, the path to this combo is paved with my failures. Speaking of which.

My failed attempts (and what I learned)

I'm sharing these because I KNOW someone out there is making the exact same mistakes right now at 1 AM. Learn from my pain.

Attempt #1 โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜†โ˜† 3 stars

What I used: Velvet Black + Silk Gold + Silk White

Why it failed: I was so proud of this one. All that expensive fabric! The quality came in at 90! And then the color check failed because there wasn't a single drop of red anywhere on the gown. I had somehow read "black and red" as "black and... fancy." What was I thinking. Lord Ravenwood stared at me through that mask and I felt it in my soul.

Attempt #2 โ˜…โ˜…โ˜†โ˜†โ˜† 2 stars

What I used: Brocade Red + Chiffon Rose + Cotton Pink

Why it failed: Overcorrected HARD. "Red is red," I told myself. Reader: red is not red. Chiffon Rose and Cotton Pink are PINK. The game knows it, Ravenwood knows it, and deep down I knew it too. Zero black coverage, no Dramatic tag anywhere, and a quality of 76 โ€” below the 88 minimum before the color check even ran. This is my most embarrassing moment in this game, and I once delivered a wedding gown inside-out.

Attempt #3 โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜† 4 stars

What I used: Velvet Black + Brocade Red + Lace Cream

Why it failed: SO close. The right skeleton โ€” black base, red secondary โ€” but Lace Cream as the accent diluted everything. Cream is neither black nor red, so my color percentages barely scraped by, and the lace's soft Romantic vibe dragged my Dramatic stat down. Final quality: 87. One point. ONE. POINT. I literally stared at the results screen in silence for a full minute.

Attempt #4 โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜…โ˜… 5 STARS!!

What I used: Velvet Black + Brocade Red + Silk Gold

Why it worked: I swapped the Lace Cream for Silk Gold, bumped velvet up to a 50% proportion, and watched the quality meter stop at 92. Five stars. Ravenwood bowed. I literally screamed out loud at 1:47 AM and my cat fled the room. Worth it. Would scream again.

Step-by-step walkthrough

If you want the full play-by-play, here's exactly how I run this commission now:

Before you accept

  1. Confirm the unlock. Masquerade Ball appears once you reach Tailor Rank 'Journeyman'. If Ravenwood hasn't shown up yet, keep grinding lower commissions until he does.
  2. Buy fabrics BEFORE accepting. Grab Velvet Black ($950), Brocade Red ($800), and Silk Gold ($900) โ€” that's $2,650 for one attempt. If you can afford it, buy 2 units of each ($5,300 total) so a retry doesn't require a shop run. Trust me on this.
  3. Save your game right before accepting. If the run goes sideways, reload. It's a single-player game โ€” no shame.

Design phase

  1. Start with Velvet Black as your base, around 50% allocation. This locks in your black coverage and the Dramatic tag.
  2. Add Brocade Red at roughly 30%. Watch the Elaborate tag light up, and confirm red clears the 25% color threshold.
  3. Finish with Silk Gold for the remaining ~20%. This is your quality insurance โ€” don't be tempted to skip it for something cheaper.
  4. Double-check the color panel: black โ‰ฅ 25%, red โ‰ฅ 25%. This combo gives you roughly 50/30/20, so you're safe, but verify anyway. Verify EVERY time.
  5. Confirm BOTH Dramatic and Elaborate are showing before you sew a single stitch. If Elaborate is missing, shift another 5% into the brocade.

Sewing phase

Sewing order honestly doesn't matter much for this one, but I do brocade first, gold silk second, and velvet last โ€” ending on the velvet just feels right. With an 88 quality floor you can't afford a sloppy minigame run, so take your time on the stitches. If you're having a bad sewing run, it's better to restart the day than hand a wobbly gown to a man in a raven mask.

Delivery

Watch the cutscene. I won't spoil it, but Ravenwood's reaction to a 5-star gown is the best delivery cinematic in the game up to that point. ๐ŸŽญ

Budget breakdown: is it worth it?

Let's talk money, because this commission is a goldmine if you don't fumble it:

  • 5-star reward: $7,800
  • Fabric cost per attempt: $2,650
  • Profit on a clean run: roughly $5,150

For context, most 3-star commissions around the same point in the game pay $2,000-3,000. This is the single biggest paycheck available at Journeyman tier by a wide margin. Even if you fail once and have to rebuy everything, you're still about $2,500 in the green.

The danger zone is panic-retrying with random combos. I've seen forum posts from people who burned $10,000+ brute-forcing this commission with whatever fabrics they had lying around. Don't be that person. Save before accepting, use the combo above, and worst case you reload and lose nothing but five minutes of your life.

Common mistakes (I made all of them)

Between my own failures and what I see on the Steam forums, these are the four mistakes that sink people on this commission:

โŒ Going all-black and forgetting red

Velvet Black is so strong that people build their whole design around it and completely blank on the red requirement. Both colors need 25%+ coverage or the color check fails โ€” no matter how high your quality is.

โŒ Thinking "red is red"

Chiffon Rose and Cotton Pink are pink, and the game treats them as pink. Brocade Red is your only true red at this tier. Basically: if it doesn't say red, it isn't red.

โŒ Sleeping on the Elaborate tag

Velvet Black covers Dramatic beautifully but contributes nothing to Elaborate. Without Brocade Red (or a lace), you'll hit 88 quality and still miss 5 stars on tag coverage. Check both tags before you sew.

โŒ Blowing the budget on the wrong expensive fabrics

Silk White ($600) and Silk Gold together LOOK tempting because expensive = good, right? Wrong. A pricey silk that breaks your color balance is worth less than a well-placed brocade. Match tags and colors first, then worry about price.

Final thoughts

The Masquerade Ball is the commission that made me fall in love with this game all over again. It's the first time Dressmaker asks you to balance everything at once โ€” colors, tags, quality, budget โ€” and the first time a client genuinely feels like a character instead of a quest marker. Lord Ravenwood, you dramatic weirdo, thanks for the $7,800.

Still stuck? Plug the requirements into our fabric calculator and test combos before you spend a single coin in-game โ€” it would've saved me four gowns and $6,000. And if you're wondering whether Velvet Black is worth hoarding for other commissions, I wrote a whole review on it. Spoiler: it absolutely is.

Good luck, and enjoy the ball. You've earned it. ๐ŸŽญ๐Ÿงต
